Design and Build
The design of the Xiaomi Mi 5 is very premium looking due to its curved back, metallic side rails, and glassy finish. The bezel is very thin which makes the display look big and immersive. At the front, there are backlit soft keys and a home button with a fingerprint scanner as well. The top side of the phone has a headphone jack and IR blaster.
On the bottom side, there is a USB Type C port and speaker grill. On the right side of the phone, there is the power button and volume rocker. The buttons are brilliantly tactile and they feel really clicky. The back of the phone is also very simple with the Mi logo at the bottom and a camera with dual-tone LED flash at the top.
Internal Hardware: Processor, Memory, Battery
The Xiaomi Mi 5 is powered by the latest Snapdragon 820 chipset which has a quad-core processor and a beefy new Adreno 530 GPU. There are three versions of this phone which include ‘Standard’, ‘Prime’ and ‘Pro’. The edition that comes to Nepal is ‘Standard’ which means no 4 GB RAM or 128 GB option. In Nepal, we get 3 GB RAM and a 32 GB storage option. The ceramic or ‘Pro’ version isn’t coming to Nepal at this time. Also, there is no external storage or SD card option so you will have to work at 32 GB because 64 GB options also aren’t coming to Nepal.
For power, the phone is using a 3000 mAh battery. It is a non-removable sealed-in battery. The battery also supports Quick Charge 3.0 because there is a Qualcomm processor. This battery size is quite sufficient for a gadget of this specification. However, the usage and life depend on the application, network, and user.
As Mi 5 is a Xiaomi phone, there is the company’s own MIUI. It is very different from the standard stock Android UI. So users might need some practice for getting used to it. The MIUI runs on Android 6.0 Marshmallow out of the box, so it can get future updates.

Display and Camera
On the front of the phone, Xiaomi Mi 5 has a 5.15″ IPS LCD screen with a 1080×1920 resolution. It is also protected by Gorilla Glass 4. Just above the display, there is a 4 MP camera for selfies and video chat. This is quite a small camera because many mid-range phones are now coming with 5 MP or even 8 MP cameras.
These days camera is very important because no matter what anyone says, a better camera equals a better phone. So the Mi 5 has a 16 MP sensor with an f/2.0 aperture and optical image stabilization (OIS) at the back. This camera can record 4K videos at 30 fps and 720p slow-motion at 120 fps. The aperture size is f/2.0 which means low light photography is good but not quite good as the Samsung Galaxy S7 or even Galaxy S6. By the way, Xiaomi has used dual-tone flash in this device so there is better color production.

Conclusion
For a price bracket of Rs 50,000, Xiaomi Mi 5 is a very good option if you want a cool-looking phone with fast hardware and a powerful camera. The only thing we found pinching here is the processor and storage option. Within this price range, many smartphone companies are giving octa-core processors. So if Xiaomi Mi5 only had such a processor and a 64 GB model available, it would have been the perfect phone for this range. Therefore we can only recommend you this phone if you can satisfy your needs with 32 GB storage and a quad-core processor, Anyway, this is just the start so we are positive that Xiaomi’s upcoming models will be better for Nepali consumers.
