Design and Hinge
Starting from the design, Samsung has a head start compared to every other brand because of being the pioneer of the foldable. The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 marks its 5 years journey and brings pretty neat design changes compared to its previous predecessor. At first, it has the new Gorilla Glass Victus 2 on the outer display which improves its overall durability. Even though this is foldable with moving parts, it is rated IPX8 water resistant which is pretty cool.
The phone weighs around 253 grams and has a dimension of 154.9 mm x 67.1 mm x 13.4 mm while being folded and has a dimension of 154.9 mm x 129.9 mm x 6.1 mm flat when opened. If we compare the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 with last year’s Z Fold 4, the design, and dimensions all remain the same but a major change is in the hinge.
Samsung has introduced its new “Flex Hinge” mechanism with the Z Fold 5. This technology allows the phone to open at a full 180° angle and fold at 0° making the Z Fold 5 a tad bit slimmer when folded. This means the hinge mechanism is smaller, more precise, and folds completely flat. Samsung states that its product has endured 200,000 folds after 5 years of everyday use.
Core Hardware
A premium device should definitely have powerful hardware and Z Fold 5 does have all the powerful parts with it. At first, the phone has Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 which is the same processor as it is in the Galaxy S23 series. This is a big upgrade from the processor on the Galaxy S22 series. And just like predecessors, there is 12 GB RAM which is still a fantastic thing. The major upgrade is in storage as it uses UFS 4.0. For the battery, there is 4400 mAh and 25W fast charge support. It is quite interesting to see that Samsung hasn’t still implemented faster charge technology in its flagship devices. It may be for safety reasons.
Display
Moving to the display the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 stands at the forefront of innovation. It has a foldable display on the inside which is a 7.6 inches slim “Infinity Flex Display”. It has a pixel density of 374 PPI and a resolution of 904×2316. Similarly, on the front side, there is a 6.2 inches “Infinity-O Display” with a pixel density of 402 PPI. Both internal and outer screens have a 120Hz adaptive refresh rate (48 -120Hz), and HDR10+ certification for a vivid and fluid user experience.
The most significant improvement in the Z Fold 5 regarding display is the main display has a peak brightness of 1,750 nits whereas the Fold 4 had 1,200 nits. One more interesting thing about this display is that there is S Pen support but it is not included in the box. It may be intriguing to use S Pen but one must be careful to crease the screen with lots of use.
Camera
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 has a powerful camera system that appeals to both passionate photographers and multimedia makers. Its rear camera configuration includes a 50 MP sensor with a wide-angle lens, a 10 MP camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 12 MP ultra-wide angle camera with a 123-degree field of view that captures huge landscapes. This dynamic trio allows users to capture amazing photos that highlight every single detail. For selfies and video calls, Z Fold 5 users may choose between a 10 MP cover camera or a covert 4 MP under-display camera on the front. As apparent as it is the front 10 MP camera is better in taking selfies.
Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 5 video capability is also at the flagship level. As a top-tier device, it supports a variety of recording modes, including 8K at 30fps, 4K at 60fps, and 1080p at 60/240fps (gyro-EIS), providing smooth and high-quality footage. While the camera system provides consistent and reliable performance, it’s worth noting that the Z Fold 5 lacks major enhancements over its predecessor, leaving room for further innovation unexplored.
