Samsung has introduced its new S series products and they have made some radical changes to it. The new flagship phones of 2015 have metallic bodies, curved glass screen, better internals, and powerful cameras. The most important and eye-catching change comes in the design and a new curved screen. Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are the new flagship phones from the company and they have been released in Nepal as well. We have also used both of the phones and have some things to share. These are interesting smartphones and this is our analysis of both of them.
The new flagship phones are here and they are quite expensive. The Samsung Galaxy S6 price in Nepal is Rs 64,000 or ($640). Similarly, the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge price in Nepal is Rs 75,000 ($750). This is the new premium that the company is charging for its top-tier offering.
Samsung has made surprising changes to the design. Till the last generation, we used to have plastic bodies with removable back covers and batteries. Now it is all metal and glass which makes the phone solid, premium but more fragile. We have to admit that these new phones look exceptionally beautiful in hand. Moreover, these new phones are able to provide wireless charging due to the glass back. Therefore both phones have 15 W fast charging support as well. S6 and S6 Edge have few differences and they come mainly in design. Let us discuss them in detail.

Reimagined, Redesigned, and Rebuilt
Samsung has completely changed the DNA of the Galaxy S lineup. They have reimagined the design and come with new attractive aesthetics. The new phones have metal bodies, solid metal rails, and Gorilla glass-covered front and back. This gives beautiful aesthetics, design, and finishing. Changing the material to metal and glass from plastic and faux leather definitely makes everything look premium.
Samsung Galaxy S6 has a flat front side and a flat glass-covered back. It has rounded corners and metal side rails. It has a dimension of 143.4 x 70.5 mm with a 6.8 mm thickness. On the other hand, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has curved glass at the front which seems to be inspired by the Galaxy Note Edge. However, the backside of the phone has a normal flat glass back. S6 Edge has a dimension of 142.1 x 70.1 mm and a thickness of 7 mm. The S6 has the looks of a traditional phone but S6 Edge looks really modern and unique.
Powerful Internal Hardware
As flagship phones, both the Galaxy S6 Edge and Galaxy S6 have top-notch features that anyone would crave. These sets are powered by Samsung’s own Exynos 7420 octa-core processor. The RAM is 3 GB and the internal storage is the latest UFS 2.0 which is faster.
In the case of storage, there are now higher options. Both S6 and S6 Edge are available with 3 GB RAM but with different storage options such as 32 GB, 64 GB, and 128 GB. It is very important to choose the perfect storage option because Samsung has removed micro SD card support. This is actually a big downgrade for people who really need a memory card in their phone for storing huge files.
Samsung Galaxy S6 is a bit thin and it only has a 2550 mAh battery whereas Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is a bit thick and it has a 2600 mAh battery. This is a small difference but we appreciate the increment where possible. There is also fast charge support with a 15W charger and wireless charging support.
Both phones have a fingerprint sensor embedded on the home button and it works very well. It is fast, responsive, and secure. Both phones have a big collection of sensors like a heart rate monitor, compass, gyroscope, barometer, SpO2 sensor, etc. The Galaxy S6 family smartphones are also running a new UI with Android 5 Lollipop. The new UI is cleaner, faster, and better than the previously cluttered UI. One good thing about Samsung’s UI is the use of curved sides. They are providing many features in the “Edge Screen” section such as edge lighting, people edge, notification, and widgets.
New Generation Display and Cameras
The S6 Edge andS6 both have 5.1 inches Super AMOLED display with a QHD resolution of 1440×2560. This gives 577 PPI pixel density to the screen. Since Galaxy Note 4 we have entered into the realm of high-resolution screens. The already amazing SAMOLED screens now look better than ever. Color, brightness, vividness, and saturation are fantastic. The Samsung Galaxy S6 has a normal flat panel and provides a normal viewing experience with a high-resolution display. Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge on the other hand has a screen with curved sides. This makes the screen feel like there is no bezel. The back and the front screen of both phones are protected by Corning Gorilla Glass 4.
On the front side of both smartphones, there is a selfie camera that is 5 MP with an f/1.9 aperture. It is capable of recording 1440p videos at 30fps and also has dual video capability. The primary camera on the backside is a 16 MP sensor with an f/1.9 aperture and Optical Image Stabilization (OIS). It is capable of shooting FHD 1080p videos at 60 fps, 720p videos at 120 fps and 2160p videos at 30 fps. The highest video resolution capacity is 4K and the highest possible picture resolution is 2988X5312. There is OIS in the camera which helps to reduce motion, jerkiness and produces stabilized photos and photos with less blur.
We are getting a 4K video recording feature in both of these phones and it is quite amazing. Still, there is a limit on record time due to the heating issue. Heating happens because 4K recording requires a lot of processing power, sensor power, and data writing. One good addition to these phones is the addition of slow-motion and high frame rate video recording capability.
Additional Features and Upgrades
The flagship phones always come with new features. For instance, in Samsung Galaxy S4 we saw a reading mode that would scroll the page as our eyes look down. This feature would also turn the display off if the reader’s eyes close while feeling sleepy. These features worked on eye-tracking. This time Samsung has introduced its new feature for wireless payment which is “Samsung Pay“. A new fingerprint sensor is also introduced which is PayPal certified.
There is NFC as well which is good but we haven’t even seen much use of NFC payments till now. Samsung Pay also has proprietary Magnetic secure transmission (MST) technology that can work without NFC, WiFi Direct, or Bluetooth. This means we can make payments in POS that uses card swiping.
Additional features include popular My Knox, S Voice support, dual-band WiFi, Screen mirroring, etc. Samsung has also introduced the Nano-SIM and this is a new form factor. The company already has Nano SIM on phones such as Galaxy A7, Galaxy A5, Galaxy E7, etc. Many people will need to change their SIM cards for this.
Impression and Galaxy S6 Price
Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge are hands down the best-looking phones we have seen in a while. Their glass and metal design look amazing. Moreover, the S6 Edge looks great with such curves. However, the curve takes some screen real estate. So it is taking away some reading or typing space. There is also glaring when light falls on the edged screen at certain angles. However, for the looks it get all the stars.
Both smartphones have top-level hardware. There is a very fast processor, higher 3 GB RAM, and the largest storage size. We like the fact that there is 32 GB minimum storage but we are very disappointed with the micro SD card support removal. We hope they bring it back again next time. Else it may be a deal-breaker for some storage junky. The camera is also very good with a powerful sensor that records photos and videos at very high resolutions. Low light photography is also a bit improved which gives great nighttime shots.
Samsung has brought some positive changes but we lost splash proof which was in Galaxy S5. Except for some things, we are getting really good phones. This time the price that the company is asking is quite higher. Experts predict that the cost of high-end smartphones is going to rise from now. So if you want a shiny beautiful phone with all top-notch specs and hardware go for any one of the new S6 models. If you want to get a flagship phone at cheap then go for the Note 4 or older Galaxy S5.
