Core Internal Hardware
While comparing the Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 with J1 (2015) there are substantial upgrades that really matter. First of all there is a Spreadtrum SC9830 chipset with quad-core processor and Mali-400 GPU. Last year the predecessor had just dual core processor while this year there is quad core. The amount of RAM and internal storage has also been doubled. Last year the RAM was 512 MB and storage was just 4 GB. This year the J1 (2016) has 1 GB (1024 MB) RAM and 8 GB internal storage. It can be expanded up to 256 GB using external SD card as well.
J1 2016 is running with a 2050 mAh battery and Android Lollipop. It also has famous features like Ultra Power and Data saving modes. As this is a budget phone, there are many cut-offs like sensors, software features, and other hardware too. This is common in budget devices but still, Samsung has packed basic hardware in J1 (2016) for the users,
Display and Cameras
Samsung Galaxy J1 2016 features a bigger high-quality screen instead of a TFT panel. This is the most noticeable improvement over its predecessor. We have got a 4.5” Super AMOLED display with a resolution of 480×800. The panel packs 207 pixels per inch which is pretty good. It is great to see an AMOLED screen in an entry-level budget phone. We are amazed that expensive even mid-range mobiles such as Galaxy J5 Prime & Galaxy J7 Prime don’t have them.
The phone packs a 5 MP primary camera at the back and a 2 MP selfie camera at the front. Both cameras have f/2.2 aperture and can take decent pictures. The back camera is capable of recording 720p HD videos with ease and the front camera is capable of taking basic-quality photos. For selfies and video chat, the 2 MP secondary shooter at the front is a basic requirement.

Analysis and View
As usual with most Samsung phones, this is also a dual SIM phone. Also, J1 (2016) is a new model, it has 4G LTE support. So even though it is a very budget device, there is network readiness for the future.
Overall, Samsung Galaxy J1 (2016) has a basic set of hardware with Android OS and a Super AMOLED screen and S features. The screen is its best part and best feature compared to any other mid-range or budget phone. This new iteration of J1 is far better than the last one. Every hardware power is almost doubled and better than the predecessor.
The Samsung Galaxy Grand Prime also comes at a similar price but offers a big screen and an 8 MP camera which makes Grand Prime a good rival. Actually, Grand Prime is quite old but still packs a lot of features to be desired compared to J1. In our view, the J1 (2016) could be polished with a few software updates. It has a good amount of features and sufficient power for this level of budget. We would recommend this phone to entry-level Android mobile buyers.
