Samsung Galaxy J Series vs Galaxy On Series

Galaxy J series VS On Series

Samsung J series is one of the most popular lineups of Samsung. It is trending in many Asian countries. But after the introduction of Samsung Galaxy On series to the market, consumers are attracted towards it. The launch of this new series proved that Samsung can and will make good budget products with great specs. The price range of the phones in these series are very similar and the specifications are also matching. As the range is same, many people are confused in the decision, so we are here to help with Samsung Galaxy J Series vs Galaxy On Series.

The J series consists of Galaxy J1, J2, J1 Ace, J5, J6, J7 and J8 for now. Similarly, the On series which is named after the online generation that is always “On”. It consists of Galaxy On5, On6n, On7, and On8. This is a new lineup and there aren’t many models here. But these are some models which compete for head to head. As for the market competition and users request we will do a comparison between the similar Samsung phones.

J series and On series are targetting the budget to mid range market. J lineup is actually meant for a wide range of customers. On series is meant for the online market only actually. However, they are available in offline stores as well. In our view, J series phones have a better design. Actually, the J series replaced the E series from the gobal market completely. As we are comparing J and On, we also have a comparison of Samsung Galaxy E series vs J series that may be useful to our readers.

Samsung Galaxy J5 vs Galaxy On5

These smartphones have 5″ screen and very similar specification. Let us first see the hardware specs in tables to do the comparison.

Looking at the specs, we see they are very much the same. The main differences are in the screen, processor, and camera. In terms of display, J5 has AMOLED which is miles better than TFT. Samsung has been placing Super AMOLED screens even in budget J lineup phones like J2. In the processor segment, Galaxy J5 again wins with a bit better Snapdragon chip. It also has a higher 16 GB storage model while On 5 is capped at 8 GB. Except that, the battery size is the same and both the phones support 4G SIM cards.

Galaxy On 5 also has an 8-megapixel camera at the back while its counterpart has 13 megapixels. This makes the J5 better in the camera, screen, and processor. The major thing comes at the cost. International cost of Galaxy J5 is $195 and the price of the On5 is $140. This price difference of $40 makes a lot of changes for people in a budget. Go with On5 to save a bit of money if you like.

Galaxy J5 Pro vs Galaxy On5 Pro

The Galaxy On 5 Pro and J5 Pro came in different times. The On5 Pro was released in 2016 while the J series counterpart came in 2017. Therefore we see a generation gap. We are comparing these two smartphones because their name is similar and they fall in the same tier.

13 MP f/1.7 back side main camera8 MP f/2.2 main back camera
13 MP f/1.9 selfie camera5 MP f/2.2 front side selfie camera

As these phones are generations apart, we see huge differences. The J5 Pro has a bigger 5.2″ Super AMOLED screen with HD resolution while On5 Pro has TFT panel. In terms of processor, the On5 Pro is weaker with just a quad-core chip while J5 Pro has octa-core processor. Memory size and storage size are the same in both mobile phones. So we are on the same plane here. In terms of camera and battery size, the new J5 wins easily. The Samsung J5 Pro has 3000 mAh battery and 13-megapixel cameras on both sides. Only difference is in the aperture size. The front side has f/1.9 while the back side has an f/1.7 aperture.

Therefore, the clear winner here is newer Galaxy J5 Pro. It is a bit expensive but the features are way better. The design is also very attractive and the performance upgrade is worth it. Most of all, camera power is the real prize winner.

Samsung Galaxy J6 vs Galaxy On6

These phones came in 2018 and they bring new design changes. In addition to new chipsets, there is also a new taller screen aspect ratio. Similarly, the screens are big, memory is also large and there are new sensors as well. Here is the comparison between these One 6 and J6.

13 MP f/1.9 back side camera13 MP f/1.9 back side camera
8 MP f/1.9 selfie camera8 MP f/1.9 selfie camera

The Galaxy On 6 and Galaxy J6 are the same phone in terms of specifications. There is no difference at all. Everything is the same from top to bottom. We don’t have to explain anything because there is no contract. In addition to the similarity in specs, the price is also close. Therefore it is best to purchase any model that is cheaper for you. One thing we want to add is that Samsung is still not increasing the battery size and screen resolution. We expect FHD these days. A new addition in these two mobiles is a rear-mounted fingerprint scanner. So for Samsung J6 and On6, we just recommend the cheapest one.

Samsung Galaxy J7 vs Galaxy On7

These are the quite expensive phones of their respective lineup. They have big screens, bigger battery, and a bit better hardware.

These smartphones have a big 5.5″ screen. Such big displays are great for consuming HD contents like pictures, videos, movies, and games. Samsung J7 has better AMOLED screen than On 5 which is nice. Many other hardware properties are similar and we see a lot of closeness.

Both of these phones have 8 GB internal storage for base models. They both have 128 GB external SD card support as well. Both J7 and On7 have 3000 mAh battery and 4G network support. The Galaxy On 7 has old Quad-core processor from Qualcomm but J7 has two variants with octa-core processor. One version has an Exynos chip while another has a Qualcomm chip.

The cameras on both phones have the same pixel count. The only difference is in apertures. 13 MP back camera of J7 has f/1.9 aperture while On7 has f/2.1 aperture. Both of these devices are running with Android 5.1.1 and TouchWiz UI.

Galaxy J8 vs Galaxy On8

There is a huge difference between launch dates and specs of these two smartphones. The J8 launched in 2018 while On8 launched in 2016. These are very far in terms of generation and we accept the differences. However, we are comparing to see what changes and upgrades we get to see in two years difference.

16 MP f/1.7 + 5 MP f/1.9 back cameras13 MP f/1.9 back camera
16 MP f/1.9 selfie camera5 MP f/1.9 selfie camera

Things are very interesting here. The On 8 is old but we have to admit it has serious power. There is a 5.5-inch screen with FHD resolution, octa-core processor and good memory size. Battery size is also 3300 mAh which is very good for a phone of that size at that time. However, in 2018, the Galaxy J8 comes with many new things. There is a big 6-inches screen with HD+ resolution, faster processor more memory and larger storage option. Samsung also offers bigger 3500 mAh battery with the newer model.

The most interesting thing is the camera because there are two cameras at back of J8. One is the 16-megapixel camera with f/1.7 aperture and another is 5-megapixel f/1.9 depth sensing module. f/1.7 is a very wide aperture and was only found in flagship devices about a year back.  In addition, there is a 16-megapixel camera at the front too. Clearly, the new J8 is a winner here but On 8 also deserves some respect for being great at its time.

Conclusion

In each and every mobile inside this article, we see many similarities and differences. As we are comparing smartphones of the same price range and tier, we get a lot of interesting things. Samsung has put many models with the same specs but with different price. In such a case, the obvious decision should be choosing the cheapest one. In some cases, there are small differences like screen or storage size. For that case, they depend on personal need and budget. We recommend getting the best quality display and higher storage every time. But we also recommend not wasting money on things you don’t need.

Samsung has done some trimming, but these are some of their best phones at this price range. In many cases specs of J and On mobile sets are very much the same. The cheaper On series phones offer good hardware with reasonable battery, processor, memory, and storage at a reasonable price. But in just small price addition, Samsung J models provide the best screen and slightly better camera. Here talking in general, On series phones have slightly diluted hardware. This is actually to offer them at a lower price online.
