Samsung J1 Ace Models in black and white

After the launch of the Galaxy J1 a few months ago, Samsung Nepal has launched a new budget smartphone in the market. It is the all-new Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace. It is a bit changed and tweaked the model compared to Galaxy J1. The company launched the Ace model silently this time. The Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace price in Nepal is Rs 10,300 for the (512 MB/4 GB) model and the international price is $130.

It has just been a few weeks since Samsung launched the new Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge+. These are apparently the best-looking and most powerful smartphones to this date. However, Nepali and Indian markets are heated with the new Galaxy J5 and Galaxy J7 these days. This is because they are really awesome budget-oriented value-providing smartphones. J7 and J5 come with the best features for the price point. There is even a crisis of the Galaxy J series in some parts of the market due to heavy demand.

Samsung Galaxy J1 is also a J series budget phone. It lies below the popular J5 and J7 in the hierarchy. It is because of its hardware and price. The Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace is another budget-range phone with basic hardware and affordable pricing. This new model is the brother of an older Samsung J1 and it comes with one main upgrade. That is memory because J1 Ace has 1 GB RAM. This is double the size of the predecessor but the 1 GB RAM model is not coming to Nepal. There are a few other changes in battery size and display technology as well.

Design and Build

Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace is an entry-level budget smartphone with a plastic body and a normal Samsung design. At the front, there is a small 4.3″ screen, sensors, speaker grill, touch navigation button, and home button. On the backside, there is a removable back with the main camera and speaker. All four sides of the phone have a chrome finish plastic frame that is smooth and rounded.

Internal Core Hardware

As told earlier, this is just an upgraded version of the normal Galaxy J1. It is a standard GSM phone with dual SIM capability. It also supports 3G and 3.5G spectrum. One important thing is that there is no 4G support for the Nepali variant. LTE versions are only available in selected countries.

Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace houses a 1.3 GHz dual-core processor on Marvell chipset. The starting base memory is 512 MB RAM but there is a 1 GB RAM model also. The phone is running Android 4.4.4 KitKat which seems outdated but it might soon get Lollipop OS soon. The internal storage of the J1 Ace is 4GB and we know that the total available for use is always lesser than that. Therefore the J1 Ace also supports external SD cards up to 64 GB but this is a reduced capacity compared to the predecessor. In the case of the battery, there is an 1800 mAh battery which is 50 mAh less than the old one.

Display and Camera

The Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace consists of a 4.3 inches Super AMOLED screen with a resolution of 480×800. This time it has an AMOLED screen which is brilliant compared to J1. It is simply amazing and must be a first that such a great OLED display is placed on an inexpensive budget phone. Even Galaxy Grand Prime and Galaxy Core Prime don’t have SuperAMOLED.

Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace has a 5 Megapixel f/2.2 rear-facing camera and a 2 MP front-facing camera. The back camera can take 720p HD videos at maximum capacity. Similarly, the front camera can take 480p video which is sufficient for 3G video calling, Skype, Viber, and video conferences.

Analysis and Verdict

Samsung Galaxy J1 Ace has a new SuperAMOLED screen which is the new best thing done by Samsung for a budget phone. We like this a lot and hope it continues. Even people with a lower budget can now enjoy a good display. The OS here is KitKat and they could have gone to Lollipop but we think the 512 MB RAM limitation caused some problems. By the way, they should update the 1 GB model with the new operating system soon.

If we look at the processor and storage of J1 Ace, they are good for the price. It can do low-intensive work and it is meant for very basic tasks only. The cameras are also reasonably powerful for basic photography. The reduced external SD card capacity is a minus point here including a 50 mAh reduction in the battery size. Actually, we don’t see much improvement in J1 Ace except for pricing and display. There is a small bump in processor speed and that is it. So if you have the older model then keep it to yourself and there is no need to jump the wagon for now.
