The Nepali market is filled with lots of budget-range smartphones these days. In the same crowded market, JIPL added new competition by introducing Coolpad smartphones. In the initial debut program, Coolpad Mega 2.5D was launched with a few other phones. So we also got the opportunity to use the Mega 2.5D for two weeks and we conducted a few tests. We conducted some tests to see the battery, display, performance, benchmark, and all other aspects. So here is our full review of the Coolpad Mega 2.5D.
Coolpad is a very new brand in the Nepali market but they are offering quite good phones at a very reasonable price. The company is trying to give the highest specs for the lowest price. The Coolpad Mega 2.5D also is in the same category as it is priced at Rs 16,496 and offers some noticeable specs. The screen is huge, the RAM is also quite large, the screen is big and the design is also classic. Now let us dive into more details about the phone.

Design and Build
The name 2.5D actually comes from the screen type. Coolpad Mega 2.5D actually has a type of glass at the top which has a slight curve at the edges of the screen. This gives a curvy feel and looks to the screen at the edges or sides. 2.5D glass is actually quite popular among people and companies.

The whole phone is made up of plastic but the back is nonremovable with a somewhat metallic finish. On the front side, there is a company logo at the bottom or chin. Touch navigation buttons come on the screen so the chin of the phone has a logo. Above the screen, the forehead has an earpiece, sensors, and a front camera. Overall Mega 2.5D is very slim and light considering its power. The looks are good and we like it but the black borders on the screen should be trimmed next time. The black frame surrounding the screen is a bit bigger.
Internal Hardware and Benchmark Results
Coolpad Mega 2.5D features Mediatek SoC with a quad-core processor clocked at 1 GHz and Mali-T720. There is 3 GB RAM, 16 GB internal storage, and SD card support up to 128 GB. RAM and storage size is very respectable for a phone in this price range. For power, there is a 2500 mAh battery under a non-removable back. In our test, it gives more than 3 hours of screen time with minimal use.

The 3 GB RAM is quite large and we can enjoy smooth multitasking with ease due to the sufficient RAM space. The process has a slower clock but RAM is big, so Mega 2.5D does require some polishing for better usage of its resources. We also tried light gaming on this device and working with this phone. There were some hiccups but the phone didn’t heat as expected. We also did some benchmarks and here are the results of Coolpad Mega 2.5D.
Camera
No phone can be judged without checking its camera. So it is very important to have a good set of cameras all around. Coolpad Mega 2.5 comes with 8 MP cameras on both the front and back sides. This is decent only because a 13 MP sensor at the back would have been better. These days almost all phones in this range come with a 13 MP camera, so 8 MP is quite less.
As for now, both of the 8 MP cameras are capable of recording videos at 720p with Auto HDR. The images from these cameras are vibrant and the Pro Mode macro shots are fantastic. Selfies from the front camera do look good and age-recognition software also works quite well. Here are some camera samples of the phone.
UI/ Software
This new smartphone is running Android Marshmallow with CoolUI. Personally, I am a fan of stock Android so I mostly prefer a stock look. However, almost all the companies in the Android market have their own UI on top of Android. The CoolUI on this phone has its own pros and most of all there are lots of features and functionality. However, we were disappointed by the presence of a few bloatware apps. Bloatware apps really take the fun out of using a fresh phone.
JIPL responded to this comment about bloatware and said that FOTA updates will be rolled out to remove those. The officials said that the next batch of phones will be free from such software as well. So we can only hope for better.

Extra Features
There are many new and basic features on this phone. There are important features of Coolpad 2.5D are LED notification and Fast charging. Most budget mobiles don’t offer LED notification and Fast charging but this one does. Users can choose between the Intelligent charging and Fast charging option after connecting the USB cable. There are also basic sensors such as Ambient light sensors for auto-brightness, accelerators, and proximity sensors.
There is both 4G support and a dual SIM feature on this device. The SIM tray is hybrid which is a down point. Companies should remove hybrid SIM and simply have three slots for two SIM trays and an SD card slot. Two of the features we miss in this phone are a fingerprint sensor and a gyroscope. So there seems to be a tradeoff.
Conclusion
Coolpad Mega 2.5D is not a complete phone and asking for a complete phone at this budget is hard due to limitations. So there are lots of space for improvements. First of all, Coolpad can start by installing a fingerprint scanner and gyroscope. It is the demand of youth because they want security and VR capability. Gaming and multitasking are good as expected but a bit throttled by the processor. Even though the external memory card support is low, we do get OTG support. We are not complaining because there are compromises to make on budget phones.
Coolpad Mega 2.5D is meant for people who want a big screen for entertainment. Its specs hold your daily needs with ease. Both cameras are capable of fulfilling normal photography demands. If you purchase this we advise you to explore more with Pro Mode. Coolpad Mega 2.5D price in Nepal is Rs 16,496 and is one of the best phones in the market. There are some tradeoffs so you can definitely consider this with other options.
