Xiaomi is leading the budget and entry segment market in Asian countries. They have many phones that give good hardware for the right price. The Redmi Note series is quite popular and this year’s new Note 9 series is also on the same track. About a month ago, the company launched Note 9 Pro which is the big brother in this series. Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 and Pro are quite similar. They have the same battery, FHD+ resolution, and main camera sensor. The major difference comes in the processor and memory.

This is the successor of Redmi Note 8 and it has some improvements over it. The predecessor was also of the same hardware caliber last year. This year there is a bigger screen at 6.53″ and a bigger battery at 5020 mAh. These are some noticeable improvements compared to last year. The new changes on Note 9 are a new Mediatek processor and a new design with Dot Display. The DotDisplay is simply an LCD screen with a hole-punch at the left side where the front camera sits.
Mediatek Helio G85 is the latest octa-core processor that has 1 GHz GPU and special HyperEngine Enhancements. This is special for gaming purpose and many gamers can benefit from this. Xiaomi and Mediatek target humble gamers constrained in budget with this CPU. According to Xiaomi’s own website, the GPU performance is 32% better and CPU performance is 22% better than previous Note 8. They also claim that the 5020 mAh battery can provide 147 hrs local music playback and 16 hrs gameplay.
Camera Details
The Redmi Note 9 actually picks up the same camera modules from last year for the backside. But their placement and layout is different because the design of the device is different. We get a main 48 MP wide-angle camera, 8 MP ultrawide sensor and 2 MP macro, and 2 MP depth-sensing camera. For the front, we get the same 13 MP sensor but the aperture size is different at f/2.3. The main camera can take 1080p videos and high-resolution photos with 48 MP pixel sensor. The 8 MP module has 118° field of view. Therefore it can capture a good amount of detail in its frame. It is great for panorama photos.
13 MP selfie camera is placed inside the hole-punch at the left side of the screen. It is also capable of taking 1080p videos. It can take videos in 16:9 and 2.39:1 aspect ratio which gives it a more cinematic look. Next at the back, there is a macro sensor that helps to take macro shots of objects at a closer distance. The depth-sensing camera gives data for portrait shots or bokeh effect. The macro camera gives a different shot and for that user needs to get very close to a subject to focus. This is very different than using other normal and previous types of sensors.
Takeaway
The Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 has the design language of the new series and brings certain upgrades over the previous year model. It has a new G85 chipset that provides improvement over the older processor. It is paired with 4 GB RAM and other technology that gives it power for running some games in low to mid settings. There is a massive battery, fast charging, and reverse charging as well. The core internals of Redmi Note 9 is meant for budget-constrained users.
The camera on this smartphone has some differences compared to the Note 9 Pro. Comparing it to last year there is not much difference. But we like the fact that there is support for video recording in the newer aspect ratio. It gives a good touch to the result and provides a cinematic look. We think that other manufacturers should also support other ratios. Overall, Redmi Note 9 is a good budget range phone with a pretty big screen, powerful battery, good hardware, nice build, and good set of features. In this price point, it is a good option for anyone who wants performance, camera, and design.
