Samsung Nepal has now launched the new Galaxy J6+ in the market. It is a very new phone and can be taken as big brother of older Galaxy J6. The design language is very different this time with many subtle changes. We have been using this mobile since two weeks and this is our review on it. The Samsung Galaxy J6+ price in Nepal is Rs 26,990 for 3 GB RAM model. The price of 4 GB RAM model of J6 Plus is Rs 31,790. Both models have different RAM and storage. We tested 3 GB RAM version so our review is based on that only.
Build and Design
Samsung’s design language is changing slowly in the J series as well. The new J6+ is quite different than older Galaxy J6. It has a solid body made up of glassy looking plastic back. Back side houses dual cameras in vertical alignment with LED flash on side. The Black color version looks great with a textured look. We showed to few people and they liked the design of this phone.
On the left side, there is volume rocker and dual SIM tray with SD card slot as well. At right side there is small speaker at top. Below that we see power button which sits flush on the body. At first sight, it is hard to see the power button. This time, the fingerprint scanner is embedded in the power button. It is also in the new Galaxy A7 (2018). As the surface area of J6+ is low, users need to put their right hand thumb or left hand index finger correctly. It took us a lot of practice to learn that but when it gets the print, the phone opens fast.
Display
This smartphone is holding 6″ IPS LCD screen with resolution of 720×1480. It is clear that we will be seeing more 18.5:9 aspect ratio screens. It makes it easier to fit big display in small body. But we are seeing a trend of increasing phone size. This is one of the phone with very big screen in J series of Samsung. J6+ offers big screen which is good for movie junkies, YouTube, web browsing and light gaming. The phone has a good screen that gives good color, contrast and details. But many of Samsung’s follower including us want to see Super AMOLED in their phones. It is at entry point of mid range and even some cheap models have AMOLED. The screen is good by all means because it is visible in day light, but we expect more from Samsung. We hope they do add their signature display next time.
Power and Performance
Lets have a look at the hardware specification of the Galaxy J6+ before talking about its power and performance.
- 6″ IPS LCD with 720×1480 resolution
- Qualcomm Snapdragon 425 Chipset
- 1.4 GHz quad core processor
- 3/4 GB RAM
- 32/64 GB On-board storage
- 3300 mAh battery
- 13 MP f/1.9 +5 MP f/2.2 rear cameras
- 8 MP f/1.9 Front camera
Looking at the hardware specs, we see a quad core processor with 3 or 4 GB RAM. It is a combination of both entry level and mid range hardware. We are getting good amount of memory and decent processor. To be honest SD 425 came out more than two years ago, so it is not quite a match for this phone at this price. Everyone expects good octa processor at this price range. So it is just fit for all day to day work, light gaming and entertainment. Battery life is good on this phone though and it may be due to power efficiency of low core processor.
Camera
The camera is as standard as Samsung puts it in their smartphones each time. Samsung Galaxy J6+ comes with dual cameras at back. One of the sensor is 13 MP f/1.9 normal wide angle one and the next is 5 MP f/2.2 for depth sensing. At the front side of the phone there is 8 MP f/1.9 camera. J6+ offers pretty nice photos from its main camera. Samsung Cameras actually don’t disappoint and its same with this phone. The colors are bright, background blur is great, details are good, images are sharper and the overall quality is satisfying. There is Live Focus and thanks to the depth sensing camera, it is great to use.
Front camera portrait selfie is called Selfie Focus and it just uses software for this. Even that is pretty good. Beautification is present so we have to deal with it by tweaking settings. Normal selfies are also nice with with that 8 MP f/1.9 module. We took many samples and the camera passed our test for this range with good grades.
Samsung Galaxy J6+ Features, Experience and verdict
Samsung packs their phones with many new software features each time. This time they are including many sensors such as Gyrosensor, compass, acceleromoter. In the past they were not used to installing gyrosensor in mid and budget range phones. Now they are doing it and this is a good sign from the manufacturer.
Talking of software features Samsung is packing them neatly. Emotify, Dual Messenger and Facial recognition are some noticeable features that we liked. Samsung Galaxy J6+ is a smartphone which as a processor meant for light gaming, mid level work and provide good entertainment on big screen. It comes with a interesting camera, decent battery but low power processor in a nice looking solid body. There are some major places to improve such as screen and processor. We hope Samsung improves and polishes these corners next time.
