Apple is offering a Mini model this time for people who want a small form factor. They are also offering a Max model who wants a large phone with everything on top of the line.
The design of the new iPhone 12 models are similar to the older iPhone 11 models. There are some changes, and they are popular among users. The new models mainly have improvements in screen, camera, video recording, and performance. The most important design change for this year is flat sides instead of rounded side rails. People like the industrial design in these new models. The sides are flat, but the corners are still rounded. One big improvement this year is the use of an OLED screen instead of an LCD.

Screen, Design and Build
Apple has gone with OLED this time, and it is better than the previous LCD display. All new models have a Super Retina XDR OLED screen with at least a 1080p resolution. Now the starting phone also has FHD resolution instead of just HD. There is HDR10, Dolby Vision and the peak brightness is 1200 nits. This gives a brilliant content consumption experience. The screen is protected by new Ceramic glass, which is better in drop protection. But it is not an improvement for scratch resistance. These both need to be balanced while making glass.
All the iPhone 12 models have a similar design as last year, and there are just a few differences. One of the main changes is flat sides and a better grip. This design was last seen in older models before the iPhone 6. However, people are very welcoming of the same design. It looks solid and premium all around. There is also a benefit of this because flat sides give more usable space to put more parts inside. One new addition this year is a round magnet at the back. This is a new change that helps to attach different modules at the back. For example, there are magnetic wallets, chargers, and cases. The software also recognizes the attached device and gives small notification animation.
A14 Bionic, Memory, Storage and Battery
This year, Apple has pushed out its new A14 Bionic processor. This is based on a 5nm fabrication process and offers a 40% improvement over the A12 Bionic chip. The GPU is about 8% better than last year’s A13 chip. Inside the SoC, there is a 16 core neural engine, 4 core GPU, an advanced image signal processor, and a machine learning controller. The iPhone 12 and Mini come with 4 GB LPDDR4X RAM while the Pro and Pro max come with 6 GB RAM. The minimum storage option in Mini is 64 GB, while the maximum option is 512 GB on Pro. There is no SD card support, so do choose carefully.
The battery on the phones are of different capacities. This depends on phone size and screen size. For example, the bigger Pro Max model has a larger battery while the Mini has a smaller battery. iPhone 12 models now have 20W fast charging with USB Power Delivery 2.0. Then there is a new magnetic wireless charging. Users can buy the magnetic charging puck and charge their phones. The charger attaches to the back with magnets on the back of the phone and provides power wirelessly. The Qi magnetic fast wireless charging can go up to 15W.
Cameras
There are some good developments in the camera section this year. All models have two common cameras. They are the main 12 MP wide-angle sensor with f/1.6 aperture and 12 MP ultrawide with f/2.4 aperture and 120˚ field of view. The main camera has got an improvement with a bigger aperture at f/1.6. Previously it was f/1.8, which means it can gather more light and give better low light photos. This dual-camera setup is available on iPhone 12 and Mini. In the case of the iPhone 12 Pro and Pro Max, there are four cameras. Actually, the third one is a 12 MP telephoto camera, while the fourth one is a Lidar sensor for depth information. The Lidar gives better 3D information for AR and portraits shots.
iPhone 12 Pro Max is actually the best offering for the camera because it has one special trick up its sleeves. All other models have normal optical image stabilization (OIS), where the lens adjusts to fix motion. But the Pro Max has advanced sensor-shift stabilization or in-body image stabilization (IBIS). This means the sensor moves to counteract the movement and provide better-stabilized videos and images. All the new models support 4K 60 FPS and 1080p 240 FPS video recording with Dolby Vision HDR support. This is an HDR format and it can bring great dynamic colors in videos. To see HDR videos, you need a monitor or TV that supports the same format. Video enthusiasts can always edit the files and fix them for normal screens.
