JEE Exam in Nepal Indian education is taken as a very good education system in Nepal and all over the world. There are many reputed institutes with good infrastructure, faculty, labs, and research facilities in India. IIT, IISc, and NITs have a very high reputation among all institutes. Each year many students compete to get admission to Indian colleges. These institutes also take foreigners, including Nepali students.
India officially opened its gates for Nepali and other foreign students in 2016 to get admission to IIT and NIT through competitive exams. This good news was announced during the Presidential visit of Pranab Mukherjee. Previously, only Indian citizens were allowed to take JEE and GATE exams. However, due to exam policy changes, NIT, IISc, and IIT admission for Nepalese students has been easy.
IITs are going to admit Nepali students for graduate and post-graduate studies from now on. IITs and NITs offer a large choice of subjects to study in Engineering. They are popular for their infrastructure, lab, faculty, and quality education. Above all, this has created a new opportunity for Nepali students to get a high-quality education.
IITs and NITs are ranked among the top technical engineering colleges in India. Many old institutes like IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi also rank among the top universities worldwide. There are other old IITs in Kharagpur, Roorkee, Kanpur, Guwahati, and Madras. They are also very highly reputed and resourceful. IIT Roorkee has a record of creating many Nepali engineers since the start of the Columbo Plan.
Nepali students used to get admission to universities like DTU, IIT, NIT, and other institutes. But these were through schemes like ICCR, DASA, SII, etc. ICCR and SII are most popular as they provide admission and scholarships for Nepalese students in Indian colleges. However, students can now take regular competitive exams and get admission directly. It gives a very good chance for Nepali candidates to pursue quality higher education.
Nepali Students in IIT and NIT
If anyone asks, ‘Can Nepali student apply for IIT or NIT, ‘ the answer is yes. IIT for Nepali students is a reality, and many Nepali students in IIT have already studied and made a great name in the field. Usually, many famous and old engineers in Nepal have graduated from IIT Roorkee, formerly known as the University of Roorkee. Most of them went from ‘The Columbo Plan,’ which the Indian Embassy provided. However, things changed, and admission processes changed.
These days, candidates need to clear the JEE Advanced exam to get admission to IIT. This applies to Nepali students as well. So if a Nepalese student wants to study Bachelor’s degree or B. Tech at IIT, appearing and clearing JEE Advanced is a must. So this becomes a public or general competition. However, things are different for an M.Tech or Master’s degree. Engineering graduates can apply for M.Tech at IITs through the ICCR scheme, SII (Study in India) scheme, or by clearing the GATE exam.
In the case of NIT, the story is a bit different. Candidates can either appear for the JEE Exam, apply through DASA (Direct Admission of Students Abroad), or apply for the India Embassy’s Compex scholarship. So there are many ways to get into NIT for Bachelor’s degree or B.Tech. In the case of M.Tech at NIT, the process is similar to applying for IIT. Candidates can apply with a GATE score card, through ICCR or SII.

JEE Exam in Nepal: Direct JEE Advanced
The competition to study at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) and the National Institute of Technology (NIT) is very high. About 14 Lakh students take the JEE exam each year for undergraduate (UG) level admission. Approximately 10,000 get admission. Only high-ranking candidates get the top institutions and scholarships. There is very tough competition. In total, there are two levels of exams for B.E or B.E.Tech in India.
The Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) is one of India’s largest engineering entrance exams. There are two parts of this exam: JEE Main and JEE Advanced. These are for (B.Tech) Bachelor level admission in IIT, NIT, IISc, and Government Funded Technical Institutes. Now, the JEE exam is also conducted in Nepal. Candidates can take the entrance exam from Kathmandu. Candidates don’t have to go to India to take exams. Most exam happens in Modern Indian School, Chobhar.
At first, JEE Main happens, and there are two papers. Paper 1 and Paper 2 both happen online. They are computer-based examinations. Then after completion of mains, successful 2,50,000 candidates can go to JEE Advanced. Successful students who pass the exam can apply for admission to desired institutes.
Nepali students who have completed their 10+2 or are studying in Nepal can directly appear for JEE Advanced. This means there is no JEE Main exam if you are studying or you completed +2 in Nepal. However, if you are a Nepali or foreigner who studied 10+2 in India, then you need to give JEE Main. Admission for international or Nepalese students is unique, and they happen for reserved seats. There are about 1100 extra seats or 10% supernumerary seats. Candidates can clear JEE Advanced and get admission to IIT, IISc, and NIT with less difficulty.
GATE Exam in Nepal
India provides a lot of scholarships and aid in education to Nepal. Similar to the UG level, they also provide admission to various postgraduate (PG) technical institutes. This is why IITs conduct GATE exams in Nepal for admission to M.Tech or the PG level. Candidates need to clear the Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) exam to get admission to M.Tech and Ph.D. Actually, GATE is an online and computer-based test. It is considered one of the toughest tests in India for Engineers. After passing, students can easily apply to top IITs and NITs.

All successful foreign candidates can apply to various institutes through direct online portals. Most institutes provide a dedicated section on their website for foreign students to apply. Candidates can apply through college websites and schemes like SII. However, if you wish to apply directly and get a conventional seat like Indian students, then you have to follow standard procedure. In the case of IIT, you must apply for counseling through the Common Offer Acceptance Portal (COAPS). They do the counseling for the top technical institutes. For NIT admission, you must apply through CCMT (Centralized Counselling for MTech / MArch/ M.Plan).
MTech is for engineers who want to specialize in their subjects. More than a hundred thousand engineers appear in this exam yearly. There is a huge charm in studying at top universities. Indian Institute of Technology has a big collection of reputed Alumni which is certainly valuable. Many big and international companies come to colleges to conduct job interviews with placement drives. Deserving students are provided with a handsome package and good placement. Passing the GATE exam also opens the way to enter Public Sector Undertakings (PSU) in India.
GATE 2024 Exam in Nepal: GATE 2024 For Nepalese and International Students
Indian Institute of Science (IISc) Bangalore is organizing the GATE 2024 exam. As of 30th August 2023, the online application for filling out the form is open. The examination forms and details are available at the IISc GATE portal. The last date for filling online form in normal mode is 29th September 2023 while the last date for an extended period is 13th October but incurs late fees. The GATE 2024 exams will be held on 3rd, 4th, 10th, and 11th February 2024. The result of the GATE 2024 exam will be published on 16th March 2024.
Now let’s discuss the most important thing which is the exam for Nepalese. Just like previous years, GATE 2024 doesn’t have any international centers. All international candidates and PIOs living abroad need to take exams in India. Therefore any other foreign national or Nepalese applicant needs to pay INR 1800 and choose a center in India. One thing that is good is that at least the fees are the same as for Indian students because in the past it used to be very high for foreign nationals.
In our view, people living in western Nepal should choose among Dehradun, Haldwani, Roorkee, Ghaziabad, Meerut, and New Delhi. Similarly, people in western Terai can choose Lucknow, Gorakhpur, and Kanpur. People who live in Terai and maybe Kathmandu can go to nearby Bihar centers such as Muzaffarpur, Patna, and Purnea. People in the eastern part of Nepal go to Siliguri or Guwahati. Our advice is to go to place which is near and where you have relatives and you can stay easily. Most Nepalese may have relatives and friends in big cities like New Delhi, Siliguri, Guwahati, and Panta.
Two Paper Combination: Increase your Chances
GATE allows students to take an exam of two papers. Actually, this two-paper combination is only allowed for compatible subjects. The exhaustive list is available at the GATE portal. However, for simple understanding, let’s take a real example. In the exam, a Civil Engineering bachelor graduate applicant can give the first main paper as CE (Civil Engineering). On top of that, he can also take exams in Agriculture, Aerospace, Architecture, Geomatics, Environmental Science, Naval Architecture, and Engineering sciences. Similarly, Computer Engineers can give exams for Data Science AI, Electronics Engineering, Mathematics, and more.
JEE and GATE Exam Preparation and Coaching in Nepal
Students have to pass JEE to get into Bachelors or BTech. For Masters or M.Tech, students have to pass the GATE exams. They need to prepare themselves before taking these competitive exams. These are tough, and they can be harder for international students. Nepali students can prepare by reading their books and materials. The books match a lot, and there are many online materials available. I have personally met many people who cleared GATE exams by themselves with the help of books and online materials.
Books are also available in the market to prepare for these exams. It is good to prepare yourself or go for JEE and GATE coaching. In the case of JEE Advanced, candidates can follow the CBSE syllabus and NCERT books. Even Nepali +2 colleges have high-quality textbooks such as Concepts of Physics Vol I and II by H.C. Verma, Maths by R.D. Sharma, Organic Chemistry by Morrison and Boyd, and more. The syllabus can be big, and it needs very good preparation. All syllabi and past questions are available on respective official sites. So check there before processing.
If you are targeting JEE Advanced, then you should start from the 11th and if you are targeting to clear the GATE exam, then start from the 3rd year at least. In India, students go to coaching classes after the 10th class, but there is almost no dedicated IIT coaching in Nepal. So it is better to take the best knowledge online classes, on YouTube, and online materials. There are many Indian online entrance preparation services, and you can subscribe to them for preparation. NPTEL Gate portal is one of the programs supported by the Government of India that can be used for preparing for the GATE exam.
Entrance Exam Form and Payment
For notification and information, it is very important to be updated with JEE and GATE websites. Also, keep updated with Indian news portals. Usually, the JEE exam notice comes on March 1st, while the GATE exam notice comes on September 1st. So try to be updated on official sites to get the correct dates of each step.
In Nepal, candidates can fill out the application online and pay online. Banks do payment if we request them for education purposes. Nabil Bank, NMB, NIBL, Himalayan, and Siddhartha banks are some banks that help to make USD payments. Nepal SBI Debit card should also be able to make INR payments, but if the payment is in USD, use a prepaid card or ask the bank to make the payment. Mostly JEE and GATE exam payment is in USD. So you may need an international dollar card or bank’s help.
In exams, officials from India come. The centers are announced when admit cards come. Candidates should print admit cards and bring identification documents like passports and ID cards to the center. IIT officials do the supervision the exams. I also attended GATE, and there were officials from IIT Roorkee. It is very important to reach the hall on time. Exams are very strict, and everyone should follow the rules.
Previously students used to go through DASA, ICCR, and the Colombo Plan. Study In India is a new scheme that offers seats and admission to top institutes nowadays. On top of all that, open competitions like GATE and JEE give more benefits. There are different routes to getting into Indian institutes of national importance. In addition, this new way of giving exams is a golden landmark for both countries.
